We've been hit with another bout of illnesses in the BG office and I'm hoping to avoid this one, after being ill in the build up to Mother's Day a couple of weeks ago. I mentioned in that blog about how I felt I was letting the team down, as when you work in a small - medium sized business you tend to be missed when out of the office. I needn't have worried however, as the team were able to step up and cover for me.Everyone in BasketsGalore tends to be and really needs to be a multi-tasker, as in multi-skilled and able to fulfill more than 1 role sometimes at the same time. The Directors originally did all jobs themselves when they first started out, and so still often lend their hand to packing baskets & processing orders when required (usually at Christmas time!)multi taskingOur web design team consist of the graphic designers and the coders/developers, so they tend to learn the basics of each others roles should one of them be absent or need help. They are already creative types too and so are also good at gift wrapping & decorating. Our in-house photographer also started out in a packaging role and is now learning photoshop software skills. Our packaging team can take on the boxing and dispatch role when required, and the dispatch team the housekeeping role. Our order processing team also help out with a wealth of admin tasks, accountancy and HR. Our marketing team can also assist with corporate accounts and purchasing. All in all  we try to have all bases covered to ensure the smooth day to day running of things in gift basket land. Obviously there are certain parts of each of our jobs that we are skilled at and so these can't be taken over quite so easily, but for anything essential we try to have the processes and documentation in place for someone to be able to step in for us when required.Do you work in a small business, or have you done in the past? Did you also tend to cover multiple roles? I think you have to have a certain type of personality/character to work in small business, as many people prefer sticking to the one job and not thinking about it once 5pm hits. For us though we think  "sure where's the fun in that?"
