How does James Joyce and Baskets Galore Choose to Celebrate Irish Culture

About the life and works of James Joyce

James Joyce was one of the most influential Irish writers of the twentieth century. He was renowned for his contributions to literature, he was innovative concerning the use of language, narrative techniques and detailed exploration of topics.

Joyce was born in 1882 into a family where he was the eldest of 10. Although his family struggled financially he excelled academically by studying at University College Dublin. Joyce’s writing career took off in the early twentieth century with his first published novel being “Chamber Music”, followed by a short-story collection known as “The Dubliners” which rose to success after painting a realistic picture of Dublin’s middle-class population. Joyce lived an incredibly unique lifestyle almost always living in exile in places like Paris and Zurich. However, he always remained connected to his Irish roots by centring his storylines around the island of Ireland and its unique heritage.

Joyce’s work has paved the way for other writers to experiment within the realms of technique and narrative.  “Bloomsday” occurs annually on the 16th of June and celebrates the works and life of James Joyce. To this very day, Joyce’s work is studied and celebrated concerning his intricate narrative techniques and astounding literary voice.

We are proud to live and operate our business on the island of Ireland therefore we believe it is extremely important to remain close to our Irish roots by celebrating Irish heritage and culture. At Baskets Galore we like to do this by offering a range of decadently crafted gifts that encapsulate a range of Irish products. Here at Baskets Galore, we believe Irish heritage should be celebrated in a multitude of ways such as product selection, supporting local producers and promoting Irish tradition to name a few examples.

I will be writing this blog from the perspective of a journalist with a limited knowledge of the works of James Joyce. I will be looking at the methods that Basket Galore and James Joyce use to convey their appreciation for Irish heritage. In conjunction with this, I will be exploring what Irish heritage means to be these entities. The objective behind this blog is to compare both entities and see what they can derive from the other.

A selection of Irish Qualities

James Joyce wrote a selection of Irish novels his most famous being “Dubliners”. Although the “Dubliners” is a selection of novels, the “Dubliners” provides a detailed and realistic depiction of life in the early twentieth century in Dublin. This collection features fifteen short novels that capture a multitude of aspects of life from childhood, adolescent life and adulthood. Notable themes include struggles with identity, societal norms and religion.

The second most famous novel written by James Joyce was “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”. This novel follows the life of Stephen Dedalus. This character was often referred to as Joyce’s alter-ego, representing Joyce’s struggles with identity, art and societal restraints within Irish society. The plot features a young and courageous Dedalus as he makes the bold move to leave Ireland and follow his dream of becoming an artist. Various aspects of Stephans character is put to the test as he struggles with identity due to his religious and strict Irish upbringing.

Both of these novels encapsulate what it means to be Irish concerning culture, tradition and religion. Joyce implemented a selection of Irish qualities relating to all aspects of life throughout his novels. This guarantees an authentic Irish stance throughout each novel.

In comparison to this Baskets Galore provides a variety of Irish authenticity throughout their extensive range of hampers and gift baskets. We have numerous authentically Irish hampers such as our “Emerald Irish  Hamper”. This hamper is filled to the brim with quality, Irish products. At Baskets Galore we pride ourselves in ordering a refined selection of artisanal foods crafts and beverages. We use Irish brands such as Lily O’Brien’s who provide delicious Irish chocolates and sweets. Alongside this Baskets Galore uses multiple other Ireland-based companies such as Food of Athenry and Brandon Vale Cheese. Baskets Galore’s primary aim is to celebrate Irish heritage by supporting small businesses and family-owned companies across Ireland.

Prompting Irish Traditions

Part of James Joyce's way of prompting Irish traditions by thoroughly exploring Irish identity and nationalism. Joyce made it his objective to expose Irish culture and the need for political independence. His characters often find themselves struggling with life as Irish citizens under British rule. Joyce makes an effort to rebel by critiquing British rule, something that was heavily frowned upon during this period.

As previously mentioned “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” features a large element of religion. The contrast between the Catholic church and Irish nationalism represents an ongoing struggle with tradition in Ireland. While Joyce's view of tradition may seem controversial he sheds light on the role tradition plays in shaping society in Ireland.

Baskets Galore also plays a role in bridging the connection between the Irish diaspora with their heritage. We possess the ability to be able to deliver Irish products worldwide. This brings those closer to their Irish heritage and relatives while sharing the joy of what it means to be Irish. Bringing families and loved ones close even if they are far away.

Supporting Local Producers

James Joyce supported local Irish business in numerous ways, particularly in the works of “Dubliners” and “Ulysses”. He mentions numerous Davy Byrne’s pubs, Sweny’s pharmacy and other local businesses. The recognition of these local businesses places them in a unique space of historical literacy. Joyce's dedication to creating vivid depictions of local commerce in Dublin gives the reader a detailed view of Dublin’s social and economic stance during this period.

Baskets Galore supports local producers in numerous ways with local artisans, farmers and small businesses in an attempt to overall support the local economy and provide sustainable practices. The emphasis is placed on the local economy while supporting ethical practices. The emphasis placed on sustaining a connection with local producers helps to preserve and celebrate the heritage of Irish food and craftsmanship.

Customization and personalization

Joyce used his unique style of language known as Hiberno-English. This is a distinctive form of English only used in Ireland, this unique form of language captures the rhythm and flavour of Irish speech patterns. This differentiated Joyce from other authors of his time, making his distinct writing style renowned. In addition to this Joyce frequently used puns, wordplay and multilingual references.

This is similar to the way Baskets Galore incorporates an element and diversity within each hamper of a gift basket. Baskets Galore offers a multitude of customization and personalization options to allow our customers to create a gift that is perfectly tailored to their needs and preferences. This is successful through several means such as product selection, personalized messages and custom wrapping and presentation.

Each customer has the opportunity to select a varied range of products to fill their hamper. Baskets Galore stocks several dreamy artisanal products such as chocolate, cheese and sweets. However, if you want to fill your gift with non-food items we have a range of gifts to suit every occasion it is completely up to you.

Overall, there is a connection between creativity and individuality this is due to themed gift baskets inspired by Irish heritage which offer elements reminiscent of Joyce’s homeland such as traditional Irish foods and books. The creativity from both entities shines through concerning the celebration of heritage, emphasizing tradition and attention to detail concerning brand characterization.
