How Did Father’s Day Originate?

Did you know that Father’s Day was invented 110 years ago by a woman named Mrs Sonora Smart Dodd? Sonora wanted to honour her dad, who was as a civil war veteran and raised six children as a single-parent (Drew, J., 2016). Even in today's modern world, that would be considered quite the handful! So as of today we celebrate not just Fathers, but important Father-like roles to us such as step-fathers, grandpas, brothers, uncles, and male mentors…A Dad holds his family together with his unspoken strength and courage, they often fight our battles without us even having to ask, and we know they are always there for a shoulder to cry on when we need them. But now that we are grown up, we should consider if our Dad’s have a shoulder of their own to cry on? Although Father’s Day is coming up and we should send our Dad’s a gift of love and appreciation, we should really try to send him love and support all the time. After all, he was there when we were growing up, but who is there for him now he is growing old?As quoted by Ama H.Vanniarachchy, “A father’s tears and fears are unseen, his love is unexpressed, but his care and protection remains as a pillar of strength throughout our lives” Picard, C. (2021). When writing this blog I came across a website with 50 heart-warming Father's Day quotes, perhaps if you really liked one and felt it sounded like your Dad you could include it in his gift card from you.

Remembering to Appreciate Dad

When we lead such hectic lives ourselves with booming careers and busy family lives, we can often rely on Dad to clean up behind us and forget to say thank you for small gestures, like bringing you a cup of tea in the evening while you catch up on work, or looking after your children while you have a night off to spend with your husband or friends.Finding the perfect gift to send your appreciation to your Dad can be tricky, especially when he insists he wants nothing more than a card, which is probably true! This leads us to buying the stereotypical Father’s Day gifts such as socks, a tie, slippers, or a mug. Make this Father’s Day extra special by sending him a gift basket to show your appreciation for everything he has done, and will continue to do for you.
