Basketsgalore Christmas Dinner May 20th 2010
It’s Christmas Dinner at Basketsgalore this week. Obviously we are not able to have our party in December, so we wait until a quiet time of year and as is our usual fashion we try to achieve two goals with a single action.
This year our Christmas Dinner is doubling up with a local business awards night which we were asked to enter by a couple of organisations.
We didn’t enter originally as it simply wasn’t high enough on our list of daily priorities, but now that our table is booked, I am glad that we made a last minute submission.
The reason is that I have only just realised that none of us said “Thank-You” to each other for our roles at Christmas time. Because we are a family business we just kind of take it for granted that everything will be done. I take for granted that my sisters will work until 12 o’clock at night to clear the backlog of orders, I take for granted that they will come in to work at weekends in November & December. I take for granted that my mother will come in and help dress all the extra hampers, which are ordered at Christmas time and that she will stay be helping us in the warehouse at 9pm most evenings.
Likewise nobody ever thanks me for ensuring that every order is dispatched before Christmas. I don’t receive any reward for coming in to work 24 hrs at the weekend.
I don’t get thanked for organising the logistics of packing and dispatching thousands of hampers with only a couple of employees.
Nearly all of the work we do by ourselves with the help of our existing staff and we simply prepare ourselves logistically, physically and mentally for the busy period. By Christmas day, we are exhausted and social chat is extremely limited, so nobody is in a particularly celebratory mood.
I always make sure I thank the company’s staff every night before they go home. So for one night only, maybe we can think of ourselves as being staff and thank each other for each of our efforts. We’ve put so much effort into trying to make Basketsgalore the best gift basket and hamper company in the UK. So for one night only Basketsgalore will ironically allow us to have a family night out where the topic of conversation is not about it, but about us!
And of course by Friday morning, I’m pretty sure that we will be back to constantly striving for perfection and efficiency of our operations. We’ll return to being family members and just expect that level of dedication from each other with no thanks or fanfare. And Basketsgalore will return to its customary role of being the Number 1 Show in town.
